Martine Reicherts will take on the chairmanship of Saint-Paul Luxembourg S.A., publisher of a.o. “Luxemburger Wort” and since April 2020 part of the Mediahuis group. Ms Reicherts’ appointment will be confirmed at the next Board meeting in July.
Martine Reicherts will succeed François Pauly, Chairman of the Board of Saint-Paul Luxembourg since 2019, who is ending his mandate in view of his next assignment as CEO of Banque Edmond de Rothschild (Switzerland). Ms Reicherts will be the first woman to head the Luxembourg media group.
Mrs Reicherts, 64 and of Luxembourgish origin, began her career as a lawyer in Luxembourg. She is a well-known figure in the institutions of the European Union, notably as a senior official of the European Commission from February 1984 until her retirement in 2018.
From 1998 to 1999 she was spokesperson for Jacques Santer, President of the European Commission. She then became Director of the Office for Infrastructure and Logistics in Luxembourg (2003) and, from 2007, Director-General of the Office for Official Publications of the European Communities.
Martine Reicherts was European Commissioner for Justice from July to October 2014 and then Director-General for Education, Youth, Sport and Culture (2015). She is a member of the Governing Council of the Luxembourg Central Bank (since 2018) and President of the National Research Fund (2019).
Martine Reicherts: “I am both moved and honoured to take over the chairmanship of this group. I will do my utmost to put the human qualities I have developed during my long career at the service of all our staff and readers. The media world is changing very rapidly and, in addition to the technological aspects, which are certainly very important, we need to establish forms of governance that take account of man in all his complexity. It is in this spirit, and with the board of directors and management, that I would like to take on this prestigious presidency.”
Gert Ysebaert, CEO Mediahuis group: “As a media group with strong roots in four European countries, Mediahuis is particularly pleased to welcome a Luxembourg woman to the board of directors of our Luxembourg entity. Ms Reicherts has a wealth of European experience which fits perfectly with the international orientation and ambition of our group. Moreover, she is the first woman to hold this position in the long history of Saint-Paul Luxembourg.”
