Euractiv, the independent pan-European media network specialised in EU affairs, has appointed Matthew Karnitschnig as its new Editor-in-Chief (EIC). He will begin in early 2025.

René Moerland, Publisher, who has also acted as Euractiv’s interim EIC since the beginning of 2024, will be able to focus fully on his role of contributing to the company’s further development and growth across Europe, jointly with Claire Boussagol, Managing Director.

As Euractiv’s incoming EIC, Matthew Karnitschnig will not just lead, he will foster an environment where journalists embrace a restless spirit of professionalism and comradery.

He comes to Euractiv from Politico Europe, where he has been Chief Europe Correspondent, based in Berlin. An Austrian national who was born and raised in the U.S., Karnitschnig joined Politico Europe at its launch in 2015 from the Wall Street Journal, where he spent 15 years in a variety of reporting and editing positions in the U.S. and Europe. At The Wall Street Journal, Karnitschnig led the paper’s coverage of the Eurocrisis, which was named a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. He is a recipient of the Gerald Loeb award, the highest honour in U.S. financial journalism, for coverage with his colleagues of the aftermath of the Lehman Brothers collapse.

René Moerland, Publisher, Euractiv: “From the day I met Matthew, I was impressed by the clarity of his ambition and his integrity, which are the embodiment of what we do every day. In conjunction with our mother company Mediahuis, we were given a mighty task in identifying a worthy EIC, and I believe we have done just that with Matthew Karnitschnig. Matthew brings new perspectives that will allow us to reach new heights as we write the next chapter for Euractiv.”

Matthew Karnitschnig: “It is an honour to take the helm of Euractiv’s newsroom – and an interesting challenge, as the EU is entering a new institutional cycle in a troubled climate. I am excited to work with my future colleagues to take Euractiv’s coverage to the next level, rooted in the best traditions of a free and unfettered press. I also know that I can wholly rely on the members of the skilled management team at Euractiv and Mediahuis to support this vision.”

Gert Ysebaert, CEO, Mediahuis: “I am delighted that Matthew will hold this prestigious and high-profile position for a brand which has influence on the European power centre. Euractiv has a great platform to build a prominent news organisation on the Continent for European politics and policy making.”

Claire Boussagol, Managing Director: “Euractiv is undergoing a significant transformation, and I firmly believe that the next chapter of the newsroom requires a profile such as Matthew’s, the experience required to drive the required level of change. I look very much forward to working with him.”
